Workshop day # 3: Capoeira and our closing ceremony

Jinga! Jinga !

Well I am dead tired. But at the same time, very excited. Time seemed to just fly by. The kids seemed very enthusiastic and I was very happy to notice that some of them had done their own research into Capoeira and knew a few movements already. Again some of the students came after class again to do it all over again. Hasib was my "volunteer" (read: victim) and he did a fantastic job. The rest of the SXMers took turns helping out the RSGers and also doing some of the filming. Of course most of the kids were interested in learning flips and tricks, but by the end of the class, they had learned enough moves to put a little sequence together. I promised to send some video tutorials to them during the rest of the year and that's a promise I intend to keep.

After the workshops, the rest of the Havo 2 students all got together in the gym. They sang, and made the party train. They played Hollandse spelletjes, and exchanged gifts. It was time to therefore say goodbye. Ekta gave a very passionate thank you speech which resulted in a sea of tears from Lisa. This was soon followed by everyone else. Everyone clearly had a good time and it was dawning on everyone that now this part of their lives was over and "normal" life was about to continue.

On behalf of all the teachers, I want to thank all the RSG'ers for their enthusiastic support and willingness to learn something new. To our hosts, thank you , everything was fantastic and we look forward to hosting you when you come to St. Maarten. To our St. Dominic Kids, thank you for being shining examples of our school and St. Maarten in general.

Let me know what you thought of the Capoeira workshops today? was it harder or easier than you thought it would be?

-Mr. T

  1. Wow! Can you believe that I'm still teary eyed? That's how much I bonded with the RSG students, I really did made new friendships on this chapter of my teenage life which is soon about to close, but coming back to that later...

Capoeira was COOLL!! Everyone was so excited when learning the new moves, it was really fun. At first most people thought it would be very difficult, but they soon discovered the simple parts of Capoeira. Others even discovered that they could do things that they never tried before(Congratz Ekta!!) At the end of the workshop MOST of the people were tired (Key word: Most..Exception of the HIGHLY energetic person(s)..even after teaching for 150 minutes plus extra lessons) Anyways, everyone enjoyed learning some basic conversations of Capoeira.

    Now the Goodbye Ceremony.
That was REALLY touching; the songs were really sweet, the games were cool, and the party line was fun. I was able to wink off the tears for the first half of the uur, but when the second part came with the gift giving and the thank you's, I just couldn't bear it..am sorry. I just really met a lot of nice people on this trip that have been so nice to me and had lots of fun with us. Thinking of not seeing them for another few years, or even never really broke my heart. But what killed me the most was when everyone else started to cry and came to give everyone hugs..I got an instant fever (Hazel is my witness)

I eventually got over the tears (kind of) and left the campus of RSG..sadly. Only to reach another break down at home. I am REALLy going to miss Holland and all the nice people who live here!

To all the people i've met and all the new friendships I've made, I just would like to say thank you for making me feel so loved. I appretiate everyone's kindness. You guys always have a special place in my heart.*tear*
Also, the teachers who warmly welcomed us into there classes at the RSG campus, and always make sure that we are having fun in hollland.
    THANK YOU ALL!!!

Until the next time i blog, this is my final goodbye, especially to the RSG students, teachers, and the BEST host family is the world. Hope you guys have an oppertunity to come to Sxm really soon.

    Love Always,
    -Lisa

  2. Today was really memorable, a day I will never forget. I came to Holland expecting something way different than what happened.

Today was the capoeira workshop, and that went really well too. Many people liked it an found easier ways to do certain things. Other people learned new things (Thanks Lisa! =D) and really showed their talent. Mr. Tyrone did his best with his flips and cartwheels and he tried some Dutch :P. (I'm joking, it wasn't THAT bad! ;) :P) I was quite tired after the first period, but I still tried to use the little energy I had left.

After that was the last presentation which was filled with games, hugs, goodbyes, and loads of tears. First off, there was a little choir that sang Dutch songs for us while everyone got the lyrics to sing along. There was also a train all around the 'gymzaal' and it was really fun. After that, there were games like jumping rope and others. There was one game where there was candy at the bottom of a bucket of water. you had to pick out the candy with your mouth and basically get wet. Let's just say that that game was quite refreshing and wet! :D

After all of that, was the time of the speeches and gifts. First, the RSG-ers gave all of us and all of the teachers really nice gifts in a yellow RSG bag. After that was the presentation of the gifts to the host families and teachers here. I gave a really honest speech that i really meant, and this sent Lisa crying, the tears that she was holding back from before. She got me a bit teary-eyed, too, but I held back my tears. That was when all the goodbyes and hugs started. I began remembering the plane ride and train ride and first day of school and host families and all the laughs and fun I had, it was a whole flashback of memories never to be forgotten.

I really did make a lot of new friedns who I hope to keep in contact with on MSN or email. I took loads of pictures the other day, and i can guarantee you all and myself that this trip is one that I will NEVER forget. I will always remember the REALLY nice families and the REALLY nice and friendly and welcoming students and teachers. This trip has been quite an experience and remembrance. I really want to thank everyone who took their time out to host us or plan activities for us, and it was very highly appreciated. We hope that we can give the students who come to SXM as great of a time as we had in Holland, which we will really have to work for.

I am looking forward to the students coming to SXM because they were really nice, and I would love to show them our beautiful island and be as friendly to them as they were to us.

I cannot say Thank You enough for all the welcomings and nice times and tears from laughter. It really has been LOADS of fun and I can't believe that trip is almost at its end, it really went by fast. I thought that it would've dragged on, but the time went by really quick, and I will definitely miss all of you guys here!

Xoxo (and an extra Xoxoxo for everyone! :D)

  3. The last day of workshops. And the last day we saw most of the RSG'ers. I'll start with the capoeira because that's what we did first after all.

The capoeira workshop taught by Mr T who's Dutch was really good (EKTA >_>) I got really tired from this workshop. Now I have muscle pain ( thanks Mr T! >_> ). Either way this was the day a lot of the Dutch students were looking forward to all week. They especially wanted to learn flips and tricks. Lastly Ekta learned that she could in fact do a cartwheel which *cough* she wudnt keep quiet about *cough*.

About the closing. First of all there were a few girls singing Dutch songs and a train was formed with all the students walking around the gym we were in (and me filming it (A) ). Then there were the Dutch games although I refrained from sticking my head in a tile of water merely to get wet candy... I had fun with the jump rope =P Afterwards gifts were exchanged. We got candy ! =D And a keychain that shows pictures (doesnt really know how to explain).

But it actually wasn't such a happy moment. Ekta gave a fantastic speech. Many of the girls including Lisa cried. It was quite an emotional moment. For me as well although I didn't cry (minor details, minor details =P)

I couldn't be more thankful to the RSG'ers for making this trip so enjoyable. And to all the students and their families by which we stayed and felt so welcome.

Our time in Oud Beijerland honestly went by way too fast. I wish we could've stayed longer. I think all of us did. I didn't even get to show of my amazing guitar skillz =( . Ah well, I will when the three students come to St. Maarten. It'd better be filmed!

    Daag

  5. Capoiera was fun and another reason i enjoyed it was because i did not have to learn the moves from scratch, and did not tire myself out. on the other hand i beleave the students of the RSG are very quick learners because they learned the hard moves fast. the last portion of the day we had a little farewell party and an exchange of gifts.
