Workshop Day # 2: Dance!!

Oh Po Slave, Oh oh Slave....Oh Po Slave....
Work Vi ! Work Vi!
Work Vi! Work Vi! Work Vi! Work Vi!

Those are words that everyone knows now after a wonderful day of dance workshops given by Miss Arlene Halley. Ekta, Lisa, Hasib and Hazel led the classes through the movement as they were explained and reinforced by a very enthusiasitc Miss Halley.

As a slightly-biased observer, I must say the kids from RSG blew me away with their enthusiasm, especially the 2nd group. They really did well in the Ponum and were great when it came around to the solos. Some of them even came back for a second class during their free period!

After that we still had some time for some hip-shaking merengue!!!!! Suavemente by Elvis Crespo proved to be a very popular song here in Holland as well as all the students and teachers recognized it and were up to the task. Some were a bit hesitant to partner up with members of the dreaded opposite sex, but eventually they all got a chance to dance....(even Mr. T and Mrs. Belzer got in on the action).

After the class was over , some students even spent their entire recess learning some breakdance and capoeira steps, and danced to some other local Caribbean music with the sounds of "Hot and Groovy" and "Feel da Rush" filling the auditorium.

But finally it was time to go, one more day of workshops ahead. Keep the energy going guys!

What did you think of the dance workshops? Do you remember where the merengue comes from? Let us know your perspective! Blog away!

  1. Well well well...another day of success and happy faces. Today was one of my favorite days at the RSG campus; it was total FUN! I was VERY impressed with the students who were dancing today. Impressed and at certain points even surprised. Every one did realy good, but H2b really put their all when dancing (BRrrtt!! 2B justt universally Sick with it..no comment Ekta!)

Other than that I think we presented Sxm's national dance pretty well, even with a camara constanly in our faces..(Annoying camara man, keyword: MAN) But I guarenty you that you will constantly see his face on camara for our next and final workshop.

Merengue...that was really cool! Everyone was did really well, even though there was an issue with the partners...ANyways at the end of the workshop I was quite satisfied even though I acquired some back pain. The students surly left gaining some physical knowledge. Soo tomorrow is Capoeira andd I cant wait to break a leg..Literally.

Soo this is Lisa saying once again

    DOEGGGGG!!!!!

  2. YES!!
I am glad the dance workshops went over so well, needless to say I had a BLAST!! Well, I guess the "partner" no, no's IS universal. I remember encountering this at SDHS too at some point in time. It usually happens in 1st form by 2nd form the students are begging for partner dancing. I always say wait till you get to like 4th form, then see if you still don't want to "hold hands"?
Suavemente was definitely a big hit. Afterwards Ekta and Lisa showed of some hip hop moves too which impressed the other students. At the end of the day, my demonstrators were definitely exhausted. Do I get some sympathy now?
But still Ekta and Lisa didn't want to take their "costume skirts" off - so cute!
Thanks you all, knock yourselves out with Capoeira now!

    Doei,

    Ms. Halley

  3. Dance went amazingly well. I am almost sure that everyone had a great time just moving their body and shaking it all out. The ponum dance was the main focus of the workshop, which everyone learned and did really well. After the ponum dance, we taught them the merengue dance which was also interesting. The partner thing was a little expected, but everyone still ended up having fun AND coming back for an extra class in their free periods. I can definitely say that dance was VERy successful, and that I had LOADS of fun! In between each class, Lisa, Hazel, Mr.Tyrone, Hasib, and I would break out with some "Suavemente" and dance the salsa and merengue with different partners. Then we had to teach yet another class the same thing, so basically at the end of the day, we definitely had our daily work out and loads of practice for the ponum and merengue. I am really glad with the outcome of the dance workshop, because I can not say how much fun I found it! And those dance skirts were just so cute and comfortable! But I ended up taking it off so it won't get dirty, how considerate of me! =)

So, I really hope to enjoy Capoeira tomorrow. Let's see hwo our last day really goes!

    Dag!

  4. Dance... well I won't mention the fact that I am again late in commenting but just start about the Dance workshop... Okay so maybe I did mention it...ah well. So yeah I actually had fun dancing. I say actually not because I don't think dancing is fun, but because well lets just say I'm not the most amazing dancer in the world.

The dance workshop went so well! All the Dutch students participated in the ponnum dance as well as the merengue. I had a lot of fun too. I must honestly say the merengue was the best part though =P

As Ekta already mentioned we would "break out dancing Salsa and Merengue" between classes with different partners. That was definitly really fun too!

I'm glad this workshop was yet again a succes with the Dutch students. On to the next Post!

    Doei!
